Koh Samui:
Located in the gulf of Thailand 80 Kms off the coast of Surat Thani
and about 560 Kms south of Bangkok, is the magical island of Koh
Samui.
The island itself is approx. 280 sq. Km, with a local population
of a mere 34,000.
Not long ago - the primary industry was coconut plantations. Even
today, plantations exist and can be seen when driving around the
island.
Renown in the past as a carefree exotic destination, accessible
only by boat to the more intrepid Backpacker, Samui evoked a sense
of escapism back in time. Because of its isolation - only those
who dared to venture discovered the laid back idealic setting.
Samui was the bohemians paradise - carefree, exotic, with an abundence
of white sandy beaches and swaying tropical palms, indeed paradise
on earth.
The lack of accessibility, kept Samui basking in the sunshine away
from the rest of the world and especially mainstream tourism. Back
then, you could get a room on the beach for as little as 200 Baht.
How things have changed
Those of us with fond memories of the past, may not necessarily
appreciate the pace of development unfolding. "Sustainable
development" is now the catch phrase amongst those living here.
Over the last 5 years, the island has witnessed substantial modernization
from various infrastructure projects that include: roads, sewerage,
hotels, and lately an 18 hole golf course.
Thankfully, the pockets of development that have occurred have
been concentrated in specific areas. Today much of the island, especially
the southern coastline retains its original beauty. You can discover
much of this magic exploring the island on a motor bike or open
top jeep.
Getting Around
Getting around is relatively easy - all roads seem to lead back
to the same place. You won't find any highways on Samui.
Instead, there is one main road which goes around the island. Approximately
50 Kms long this road connects the main beaches to the town center,
airport and vehicular ferry. Side roads feed off the main road to
towns and villages.
Most travelers who have enough time can appreciate exploring the
many interesting sites. The best mode of transport, although somewhat
dangerous, is moped. If the
weather is nice, a moped allows you can see a lot more. Renting
one is cheap about Bth. 250-300 and fuel is inexpensive.
A tour around the island will take you approximately 3 - 4 hours
(or more) depending on how many stops you make along the way.
